I never thought I would make a career out of social media. I never thought it was even possible. After all, I am a self-confessed introvert who prefers to stay at home than socializing on Friday nights. Or even mornings.
But we live in a world where almost everyone is a little social media obsessed. And gone are the days where social media was just for connecting with people. Most businesses, if not all, are now online.
Some people, like me, tweeting, updating status, snapping pictures and Instagramming are more than just a hobby. It’s a living.
There are many opportunities you can make money using social media. It is quite lucrative, especially today where more and more brands are looking for influencers and social media managers.
So if you’re always online and enjoy posting on social media, why not get paid to do it?
But before you start jumping on the bandwagon of online workers, there are some things you should keep in mind.
Working in social media requires the same dedication as with any other jobs. Sure it’s attractive when people know that you can work anywhere in the world, even while lounging in the beach holding a tropical cocktail in your swimsuit but it can be pretty stressful and demanding too. What you see in most social media profiles are the fruits of their labor, although behind-the-scenes posts are getting popular nowadays which is really great.
Aside from dedication, having a great command in English (or in any language you use) is extremely important. Spelling and grammar errors can affect a brand’s reputation. If you will be the face or voice for a brand, you need to have a great page.
So how can you make money with social media? Be an influencer or a social media manager. Or be both.

A social media manager is exactly what the title is, a manager of social media accounts. I got my first social media job when I was a writer for a company I worked with before. I was writing articles for them when the social media trend skyrocketed. I read articles, news, gathered information as much as I can and kept on learning every day. I truly believe that experience is the best teacher. And that’s exactly how I ended up being a social media manager. Having managed multiple accounts including personal ones, I was able to hone my skills not just in management but also in marketing and writing.
As a social media manager, you have to be versatile and ready to give up your voice. Unless you focus on one niche. I have worked with brands in fashion, marketing, health, food, lifestyle, fitness and travel industries so adjusting to the brand’s style and voice is very crucial.
